A Message From the Commissioner

My name is Matt Crowley and I have the distinct honor of serving as your Regional Commissioner. AYSO Region 42 is part of the American Youth Soccer Organization, a nationwide, non-profit, volunteer based organization that provides world class soccer programs that enrich children's lives. AYSO is a fun, fair, and safe environment for children who want to learn this great sport called soccer. Our program is based on the six AYSO philosophies – Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development. By applying these philosophies, each player has the same opportunity to experience the game and develop as a player, no matter their skill level.

Our Region was chartered in 1973, so we are celebrating our 50th year of providing a youth soccer program in Newbury Park. We could not do it without the dedication of countless amazing volunteers from our community who step up as coaches, referees, team managers, and board members. To put on a quality program each season, we need over 400 volunteers to coach more than 100 teams, referee over 500 games, work the snack shack, monitor fields, and more. We want to make our 50th year the best yet, so please consider how you can help make that vision a reality.

I’d also like to take a moment to encourage parents and volunteers to always be positive and supportive to the players, coaches, and referees. As adults, we are role models for our children as they watch and learn from our actions. You may not agree with a coach or referee decision, but it is important to remember that they are the foundation of our volunteer staff, and without them we would be unable to provide a successful program.

To address our current 2023 fall season rate increase: we appreciate that any rise in costs for our families can be challenging, and we work hard to keep the program we offer here in our Region running efficiently and our costs to a minimum. Because of those efforts, we have been able to keep our player fees the same for over six years, while still providing each player with a complete uniform kit, a team picture packet, player insurance, fields for practices and games, and medals for all 5U-8U players and for the top teams in our 10U-14U divisions. However, in that time, the Region has experienced a significant increase in costs for field permits, player and referee uniforms, coaching gear and safety kits, field upkeep and equipment/building maintenance, team medals, pictures, and the national player fee, which includes individual player insurance. We have also experienced new line items in our budget, including state required background checks (Live Scan) for the hundreds of volunteers who assist us in putting on our fall program each year. This year’s increase in registration fees helps the Region ensure we can continue providing a world class youth soccer program for our fall season and for years to come. If you have any additional questions, please email our Regional Commissioner at [email protected] or our Registrar at [email protected].

And finally, our Region is fortunate to be supported by a wonderful regional board that dedicates countless hours to organizing and planning our season and events. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to them. And if you have a moment, perhaps even throw a thank you their way.

We’re excited your family has chosen Region 42 and we look forward to seeing everyone on the fields. Have a great soccer season!
