AYSO Region 42 Youth Referee Program

One of AYSO Region 42's youth referees

Overview

The AYSO Region Youth Referee Program is an opportunity for youths of age 10 or above, to participate as certified referees on 7U and 8U games and for youths of age 12 or above, to participate has certified referees on 10U games.

Based on our philosophy of CODE, youth referees are taught the laws of the game in either the U-8 or Regional class, and then mentored throughout the year to improve their skills.

CODE is simply:

C-onfidence – It takes a lot of guts to get an adult in the middle of the field let alone a youth. Knowing the rules, dealing with spectators and ensuring a fun, fair and safe environment is a big challenge. Do not be surprised at all to see a youth ref in the center position with two parents as the Assistant Referees.

O-verachive – Refereeing is rewarded and the more you perform, the more you are reward with our Ref-Buck system. Unlike the adult referee program, our youth program has no upper boundaries. A youth ref can earn 2 bucks a GAME and can officiate as many games as three games a day. These points get converted to dollars and each youth referee will receive an amazon gift card at the end of the season. In addition, our community is very active with extra donations, ranging from food to extra gifts… The adult program is fun, but the youth program is GREAT.

D-emonstration – Youth refs are encouraged to show their skills and take constructive criticism from Region 42’s mentor program. This is usually so popular that mentors are as busy helping new referees as they are actually refereeing themselves. Furthermore, youth refs are encouraged to act as the ‘center’ referree. Most find it not only a more rewarding experience, but the knowledge gained actually helps them perform better as players.

E-xample – Lastly, our youth refs are an example for everyone, not only peers but adults. It is not uncommon at all to see a youth ref, helping out a parent with their duties, collaborating with other referees and helping others get acclimated to the responsibility of creating a fun, fair and safe environment. They are not only officials on the field, but are instructors. The payoff for all of us is to see our son or daughter thanked by a younger child for a job well done.

Education

  • To be eligible to referee, you must submit a volunteer application and apply for either a U8 or Regional class.
  • Upon completion, a rule book, referee wallet, whistle, full uniform and badge (for Regional) will be issued.
  • All of this is FREE of charge.

Reward System

Our reward system is very simple.

  • You must be a youth referee… Adults are not eligible.
  • Officiating as either the Center Referee or the Assistant Referee earns you two points.this means that you can earn up to 6 ref bucks in one weekend.
  • One game gets you free drinks at the snack shack, two provides an entire meal. Just go to the side door and ask for a referee meal.
  • There will also be benchmark awards for reaching a certain amount of games in the season, an email will be sent out with the gifts and game amounts needed.
  • At the end of the year, points are converted to dollars and you will receive an amazon gift card for the total amount.
  • Lastly, ALL TIME contributed as a referee (training and field) is applicable for Community Service Hours, acceptable at all regional elementary, middle and high schools. Let your Youth Referee Administrator know ahead of time, and a formal document will be issued at the end of the year.

Scheduling Requirements

Because points are calculated from our referee self scheduling system, the following is required:

  • You must have an account on referee self scheduling system, If you need help, contact any of the referee staff either via email or on the field.
  • It is suggested that you schedule yourself BEFORE a game on the scheduler, but on-field scheduling is available also.
  • If you do schedule on-field, please write your name CLEARLY in one of boxes or the game you want and the position you wish to perform.
