Western States Champions!
The AYSO Western States All-Stars Championships bring together the best teams from California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. To qualify, teams must first win their respective Section championships. The Newbury Park Panthers 10U Girls A team did so in February, and were invited to participate in the tournament.
In the 10U Girls division, the four semifinalists were:
Section 1
(Southern Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernadino Counties): South Los Angeles/Ladera (Region 1031)
Section 2
(Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington):Bishop (Region 150)
Section 10
(Central California, and Northern Los Angeles and Ventura Counties): Newbury Park (Region 42)
Section 11
(Orange and San Diego Counties): Santee (Region 341)
The first semifinal featured South LA defeating Santee 2–0, while Newbury Park routed Bishop 6–0 in the other. In the final, Newbury Park and South LA played a back-and-forth game and full time ended with the score tied 2–2. After a tense two periods of extra time, the score was still tied, which meant that it would take penalty kicks to decide the winner, from which the Panthers emerged victorious.
Congratulations, ladies! Your success embodies everything that AYSO stands for, and you make us proud!
